About Us

We Work to Honor Our Patriot Ancestors

Alabama State Regent Rita Horton visits with the Stephens Chapter DAR

The Stephens Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1904 by Ellen Stephens Hildreth in Decatur, Alabama.  The chapter is named for John Stephens of Virginia, who served in Company 5 of Nathaniel Gist’s 11th Virginia Regiment, Continental Line, during the American Revolution.

The Stephens Chapter DAR is dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children.

The Stephens Chapter actively volunteers in the local community, offering support to veteran patients, schools, teachers, students, and many more.  A favorite chapter service project is the Adopt-A-Class program, with the chapter adopting a third grade class at the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School* in Grant, Alabama.

DAR members also volunteer extensively in Decatur city schools, annually promote local awareness of Constitution Week, and support veterans at the Birmingham VA Medical Center.   An important role for the chapter is to place emphasis on the education of American history, respect for the American flag, and obedience to the U.S. Constitution.
